Business Cards, Post-Its, Documents…Oh My!

By Naomi Dolin-Aubertin

When it comes to the work day, I think it's safe to say we're all fighting the battle to stay organized. Between post-it notes, scratch pads, OneNote, etc. I have notes and reminders all over the place. My bulletin board alone is a mass of documents, handwritten notes, and business cards.

It can be hard to reconcile the digital and the handwritten in today's workplace, especially for a die-hard pen and paper person like myself. One solution is Evernote. Now I want to clarify that this is in no way a promo piece about Evernote. I signed up for the service back in 2009 and proceeded to not use it for five years. However, in preparing for an upcoming marketing conference, I was looking for better ways to organize myself. And stumbled across an article that drove me to reinstall the application.

One of the problems with conferences, trade shows, and networking meetings is the shifting sea of business cards. Now, as I discovered, Evernote has a special business card camera that automatically recognizes the card, takes a photo, and if you give it permission, syncs the data with LinkedIn, creating instant connections. I love this! Not only does Evernote have the capability to read the data, but it does all the heavy-lifting for me. What's better than technology working for you like that?

The other benefit to Evernote is its ability to organize different types of data: documents, photos, webpages. You name it, you can upload, link, and store it. If you're a paper pack rat, or even a digital pack rat, being able to quickly search for this data is invaluable.

I'm going to be giving Evernote a second try. And if there's any app you've been wondering about, leave me a message in the comments.
